Mahan
Cause: Provide health services in the tribal area of Melghat in the western state
of Maharashtra in India. Mahan runs an hospital as well as conducts specialty
diagnostic & treatment camps in Melghat like Gynecology & Obstetrics, Pediatrics ,
Ophthalmology, etc.
Profile: MAHAN, an acronym for �Meditation, AIDS, Health , Addiction, Nutrition�,
was formed in 1998 by a young couple, Dr. Ashish Satav (a MD) and his wife,
Dr. Kavita Satav (MS ophthalmology). Their aim is to provide basic health services
to the tribal population of Melghat, a hilly forest area, where majority of the people are below the poverty line. This area is known
for highest mortality for the children under the age of 5 and in the age group of 16-50 years in Maharashtra. Most of the mortality
is the result of malnutrition.
Accomplishments: Below is a partial list of accomplishments of Mahan,
- More than 40,000 patients treated free of cost
- Over 500 patients treated in the hospital with serious illnesses like Myocardial infarction, brain haemorrhage, cerebral
malaria, meningitis, tetanus etc.
- Operated more than 375 cases with ophthalmic problems especially cataract (intra-ocular lens implantation).
- Trained 19 village health workers for treatment of children under the age of 5.
- Various NGOs and social minded people are helping the poor people due to massive campaigning on this issue by MAHAN.
As a result, most of the severely malnourished babies are getting supplementary nutrition in 19 villages and many
deaths due to malnutrition have been prevented
- More than 4000 pre-school children from 37 villages in Melghat were examined and whoever required medical treatment
were treated.
- With the help of other charitable trusts, provided nutritious food to more than 300 malnourished babies and their mothers
for 3 months.
- Additionally, MAHAN conducts many preventive programs,
- Over 599 Health Education Programs organized for more than 20000 people
- Organize Youth Dialogue & Health Training Program
- Over 100 volunteers and patients trained and treated by us quit drinking alcohol and smoking
- Organized Health Training programs for Doctors, Nurses, Anganwadi supervisors, Teachers, NGO. & village health workers
Arpan's Participation:
- Initial target is to provide steady stream of funds on monthly basis.
- In the second phase adopt a center/s and/or children and provide ongoing support.
- Arpan is, and will continue to be in touch with Mahan and finalize the details of the second phase.
- Encourage all the contributors of ARPAN to visit any facility in India. The trip can be planned in advance from USA.
